There will be a social next week. Details to follow soon.

Want to appear on film?
If you fancy being filmed running please get back to me and I’ll pass on your details to some student film makers.

BUSA Cross Country 2008 Report

Posted on February 9, 2008

A report from BUSA cross country is now available, and there are some photos in the gallery.

Week 16 News

Posted on February 5, 2008

Hey Everybody!

Here’s the relevant news for Week 16…

BUSA XC Champs 2008 report
Congratulations and thanks to everyone who travelled to Swansea at the weekend for all their hard work and good humour; it really was fun! The race itself was tough; the weather was cold and the course was muddy and hilly. Also, the standard was awesome, especially since the race also doubled as trials for the World Cross Country Championships! The blokes finished 37th/40 complete teams with Oliver Keppel, Sam Knight, Nic De La Vega and Danny Jones completing the scoring quartet, augmented by sterling efforts from Mark Cockles and Matthew Freezer.

The ladies team also put in massively gutsy efforts as the course got more and more churned up. Ladies Captain Mary Nelson was first home and probably shouldn’t have run she was so ill. She had a great tussle against second scorer Kirsty Thorndyke; Kirsty only lost her lead after having the misfortune of losing a shoe in the mud! Closing the team were Sarah Kuhl and Lauren Nelson, both making their cross country debuts and the latter defying doctor’s orders to run with one lung working properly. Both started the year as joggers yet have got to the stage where they can proudly represent the uni on a national level, giving their absolute all in the process. Really, you can’t ask for more than that and that exemplified the Kent spirit over the whole championships, including the injured Mike Hughes being the ultimate team man and volunteering to drive the team all the way to Swansea.

Some photos have been posted on Facebook already and full results and a report will be available later in the week.

BUSA Indoor team selection
The BUSA Indoors take place on the 15-16 March in Sheffield and we are now selecting a team for this event. If you would like to be considered, please could you email myself, Stephen (men’s captain, sp251) or Mary (ladies capatin, mn51) by 5 pm Friday please.

Kit mix ups and complaints
Recently, there has been some confusion in picking up vests; some blokes have collected ladies sizes and vice versa. Also, it has come to light that there has been some dissatisfaction with other kit so far, including names being mispelt and the odd item missing. I’ll also get vests bought for December competition off people for printing this week. If you have been affected by any of this, I’ll be in the Gul on Tuesday 1 - 3 pm and we’ll  sort it out.

Training
Everything is back to normal this week with Stephen well enough to sprint again and the Running Club returning to its normal times. If you are interested in trying some field events, drop me a line and we’ll sort something out for you. All training schedules can be found on the ‘training’ page..

Things to look forward to
There will be a social to look forward to soon and all club training/team bonding session in the next week or two…keep your ears to the ground.

Athletes on film…
We’ve been contacted by a couple of people (i.e. film students) asking if we have any athletes who want to appear running on film. The concepts are rather arty, including the passing of time and unrequited desire(!). If you fancy doing this, please drop me a line

Athlete of the Week
Joint honours this week go to Sarah Kuhl and Lauren Nelson for their efforts in Swansea.

Have a good week, Sam (Athletics and Running Club)

Week 15 News

Posted on January 29, 2008

Aloha!

Hope everyone is well, this is Week 15’s athletics based news…

Athlete of the Week
This week’s Athlete of the Week is… Nick De La Vega for being the Running Club’s Mr. Dependable. Honourable mentions to Charles and Steve Walker also.

BUSA Cross Country Champs this weekend!!
The Cross Country Team will be travelling to Swansea for the first BUSA event of the year on Friday morning, due to return on Sunday evening. There will be a meeting later this week where I will confirm travel arrangements, give a list of kit requirements, contact deatils etc., attendance is compulsory. We wish everyone the best of luck!

Southern XC Champs & Canterbury 10 results
Oliver Keppel running for his Southampton Running Club was 149th at the South of England Cross Country championships at Parliament Hill in London, running about 56 mins for 9 miles over the hilliest, muddiest mutha of a course there is. A great result!

Just a day later was the Canterbury 10…did you run it? If so, we’d love to know how you got on.

Update from the ‘cutting edge’ media department
Mike Hughes has added some new features to the website, including a press cutting section, athlete profiles and a training advice page. Also, because we’re hip, we’ve got a new Facebook page. Have a look for the ‘University of Kent Athletics and Running Club’ group and share the kudos.

Training
As usual, training schedules can be found on the ‘training’ page of the website except for the next couple of items. Stephen has apologised for his absence from sprint training recently because he is currently bedridden; we hope you get well soon. If you do want to do some sprinting, look out for anyone in club gear and they will gladly look after you. The Running Club won’t be on this Friday and Sunday because almost everyone will be in Swansea.

Links with other campuses

Yep, the Club is expanding, beginning with University of Kent students at the Medway campus. This will mean we will be a more inclusive and stronger club. Exciting, huh?

Kit collection
Some kit is still awaiting collection in the VW building, please pick it up this week; you might need it! Also, are there any complaints so far? I know Sophie’s hoody had a ripped seam on arrival.

Finally, the guys who bought competition vests for the SESSA Indoors, I will arrange for them to be printed next week.

Membership
I’m pleased to report that some new members have joined us this term; thank you and welcome. We still have some not so new members who haven’t paid up (yes, De La Vega, you) so please could you do that as soon as you can so you are insured when training.#

Sam

Week 14 News

Posted on January 22, 2008

Hello All,

I hope everyone is well and had a good break. To help keep up with any new year’s resolutions, here’s the week’s news…

Athletes in competition shock!

We’ve only been back a week but people have been competiting hard already. The Charity Fun Run was a great success, with sevral hundred pounds being raised for the Willow Foundation. There was also some bloody good running! Over the (less than) 3 mile course, club member Oliver Keppel romped to victory with El Presidente 3rd and other Running Club members not too far behind. Ladies Captain Mary Nelson was the first lady home. Well done to everyone who took part and an immense thanks to Invicta’s James Roberts and Maggie Wyatt for help setting up.

Sophie Copping set a new triple jump PB of 10.85 m at the weekend as well as making the last 6 of her long jump competition. Well done indeed!

Kit Orders
It’s here!! It looks rather swanky indeed and those who ordered before Christmas can collect from Kirsty Sutton or Tom Marsh in the Virginia Woolf building. Please note that ladies vests are the ones cut with the shorter arms and rounder neck.

Training and Running Club
All training schedules remain the same as last term and details can be found on the ‘training’ page.  Nicholas and Matthew will be leading the Running Club this week as Mary is away and so am I for a family funeral. The Running Club is a ‘no pressure’ jog/easy run and it is a great way to keep fit at the start of a new year. Last year saw some real success stories and on Sunday, Lauren, Charles and especially Danny all excelled themselves. However, all athletes in BUSA cross country team should be training if they are not injured.

Committee meeting
The committee met last week and the minutes will be posted on the website in the next day or two.

Barretts Canterbury 10
One of the best 10 mile road runs in Kent takes place on Sunday 27th January and entry forms can be acquired from the track, the uni sports centre, Sports sab Tom marsh or online at www.invictaeastkent.org.uk

Union stuff
The union are providing a myriad of training and life skills seesions with their ‘Stand Up’ scheme this term and the superb ‘Fresh Start’ project has loads of brilliant stuff aimed at people moving towards a healthier lifestyle. Please have a look and remember that the Union AGM is on the 29th.

Athlete of the Week
Athlete of the Week for week 13 is…Danny Jones for his heroic effort in his first run to and from Whitstable, all 13.5 miles of it!

Hope you all have a good week,

Sam (Athletics & Running Club)

Fun Run on 16th January

Posted on January 15, 2008

On Wednesday 16th January is the Charity Fun Run which forms part of the Fresh Start project as well as raising money in memory of Jordan Ferrara, former Darwin JCC Sports Officer, who passed away last year.

There will be a 3 mile run starting at 2pm from the sports pavillion, runners will need to arrive at 1pm, in Parkwood and a 1.5 mile run starting at 2.45pm from the same place, runners will need to arrive at 1.30pm.

There is a team competition, with a prize for the first university club to get five members across the finishing line. So that’s going to be athletics, obviously!

Its £1 entry fee but we encourage people to donate as much as they like towards the Willow Foundation.

If you are interested in taking part in either run, please email Tom Marsh t.j.marsh@kent.ac.uk in order to receive your running number.

Also any help from non-runners with marshalling would be appreciated, email Sam (president@kuac.org.uk) for details.

Week 12 News

Posted on December 9, 2007

Hello All,

I hope everyone is feeling chipper and staying on top of things as we approach the end of term. Remember, exercise keeps you sharp during times of mental overload! On that note, the week’s news is as follows…

SESSA Indoor Championships

A team of 8 athletes and a slightly fraught team manager made it to the Lee Valley stadium in north London on Wednesday despite a couple of major logistical disasters. When we got there (eventually), the team did brilliantly to outshine Medway. Leading the way were Sophie Copping and Gemma Eastman who put in awesome performances to win silver medals in the 200 m and the high jump respectively. Other highlights were a brave debut at 1500 m by Carine Ng Fuk Chong and promising 200 m efforts by Adam Silver and David Ellis (running under the alias of Alexander Kan), as well as spirited 4 x 200 m relay contributions alongside Josh Nice and Mark Cockles. Much gratitude to Josh and Gemma for driving and a collective pat on the back for the team.

Full results are now available here. Photos are in the photo gallery.

Athlete of the Week

No contest… joint winners this week are Sophie Copping and Gemma Eastman for medalling last week.

Cross Country (Championships)

There is a Fitness League race taking place on Sunday. Would you like to take part? If so please email me by Wednesday please. This BUSA XC competition is taking place on February 2 in Swansea. I’m booking accommodation and selecting a team this week, so if you wish to be considered please email me by Wednesday and be prepared to pay your membership and buy competition kit.

Kit orders

I shall be in the Gulbenkian taking kit orders on Monday 12-3 pm and Wednesday 12-3 pm taking kit orders. I’ll only accept email orders if you have a valid reason for not making it. I’m putting the final order in on Thursday morning, so if you miss it out, that’s it. On offer are tracksuit tops that our wind and water resistant, hoodies and t-shirts (if enough people want them) and all important competition vests. If we buy in bulk, the costs come down. Bring your chequebooks and we’ll crunch some numbers!

Social

There has been a rumour of a social on Wednesday night. Confirmation will follow shortly.

Training

All training schedules remain the same this week except there will be no Running Club on Friday. Details on the training page.
Good luck with your work, have a good vacation and keep up the training,

Sam

Week 11 News

Posted on December 3, 2007

Week 11?! God help us. Here’s the week’s news…

Athlete of the Week
This week’s Athlete of the Week is… Mary Nelson for her continued sterling work with the Running Club.

Indoor Team
The Indoor Squad is having its first outing this year, competiting in the SESSA Indoor Championships in London this Wednesday. The best of luck to all the guys ‘n girls taking part, hopefully we shall return home having stuffed Medway and please remember, for future events, you are very welcome to put yourself forward.#

Cross Country Team
The focus is shifting to getting the BUSA Cross Country Team together in the next fortnight. If you would like to be considered for this please feel free to email me.

Kit
Orders are definitely happening this week, I haven’t been able to finalise everything yet though because I like everyone else has had a massive amount of work to do. Watch this space.

Training
All schedules remain the same this week, and as always, can be found on the training page.

Running Club
Well done to Mark Cockles and Mary Nelson for turning up today. If you didn’t come out because it was raining, you are going to have to come up with a better excuse than that! It normally stops just before people get going. And if it doesn’t? If ain’t raining, it ain’t training; wear a waterproof!

Membership
Please pay your subs soon. This is payable through the Kent Union website or at the cash office in the Mandela Building; Kent Union staff are happy to help if you have trouble with their system.

Week 10 News

Posted on November 26, 2007

Hey Guys,

I hope you all have had a grand old week, the week’s news is as follows:

Athlete of the Week
This week’s Athlete of the Week is …Mike Hughes for churning out the mile reps on Tuesday night. Well done indeed.

Kit
Thank you to those Indoor competitiors who ordered their vests on Friday, Carine and Adam could you please let me know when you are on campus so I can collect your money. This week, we’ll be taking orders for a much wider range of stuff including hoodies, training jackets and bespoke vests. More info will follow shortly.

Training
Training schedules remain unchanged (!) this week, except I shall be attempting to arrange some High Jump training this week. I’ll send an email update out regarding the latter and all other information can be discovered at www.kuac.org.uk.

Socials
Thanks to Rob for organising Wednesday’s social and thanks to those who made it out; it seemed a good time was had by all. We are revising plans for the Christmas dinner, something much cheaper. Watch this space.

Indoor Team
I’m finalising our entry form and I’ll send out more information on the line-up tomorrow.

Membership
As far as I’m aware, the Union’s website still isn’t offering our advertised two-tier membership scheme, which makes pretty angry. I’ll ask about sorting this out next week. If you do train regularly, please can you pay your membership because we are only a couple of members short of unlocking our budget (which we desperately need to do!). If you are struggling with the system still, you can email me for assitance or Union staff in the Virginia Woolf building will be happy to help.

Have a good week, Sam (Athletics and Running Club)

Week 9 News

Posted on November 19, 2007

Hey Everyone,

I hope it has been a good week for you all. The week’s parish notices are as follows…

Socials
Lots of activity this week. Social sec Rob has organised a social this Wednesday, meeting between 8.30-9 pm at the Westgate Wetherspoons before embarking on some athletics inspired drinking and with luck, celebrating England qualifiying in the football. Non-drinkers have been considered. Also, if you want to come to the Christmas dinner on the 11th December, you need to give your £10 deposit to Rob tommorow. Please email him (rl76) without further ado if you are in anyway curious.

Athlete of the Week
This week’s athlete of the week is David Ellis for his excellent sprinting efforts this week. Congratulations.

Training
Nothing much to report this week except the Running Club now meets on Friday at 3 pm and Sunday runs have been moved to 1 pm. Look out for us outside the Sports Centre. All training times can be found on the training page; everyone is very welcome and will be looked after.

Kit
After some spanners in the works recently, we should be able to take kit orders later this week.

Membership
To order this kit, go on trips and be insured in training, you need to pay your membership. This can be done through Kent Union’s fiddly website, or you can just register on their social space and pay by cash at the cash office in the Mandela Building near the Venue.

See you at training and/or Wednesday’s social,

Sam (Athletics and Running Club)

Sunday Run Time Change

Posted on November 14, 2007

As the nights are rapidly drawing in, and nobody fancies running around the woods in the dark, Sunday’s Run has been moved from 1600 to 1300. See you all there!

Week 8 News

Posted on November 12, 2007

Hello All,

Hope you are well and the week’s news is as follows:

New website
Mike Hughes has designed the new website, www.kuac.org.uk. Please have a browse around, it’s very informative and Mike has succeeded in phrasing the information I have been mangling all year far more eloquently in a weekend’s work! It’s going to become a proper focal point for the Club’s news, socials, contact details, fixtures and results so please get in the habit of checking it regularly.

Training
Training schedules remain the same as last week, so I will not bother reproducing them and instead direct you to the training page. Once again, everybody is welcome, regardless of experience, fitness or perceived ability level and you are guaranteed a very warm welcome.

Cross country results
Well done to Nick De La Vega, Mike Hughes, Danny Jones and Matthew Freezer for putting in promising performances in today’s Fitness League race at Swanley. There’s more where that came from lads! Results and photos will be on the website shortly. All runners are welcome to have a go at these very friendly races, please don’t be shy!

Athlete of the Week
This is a tough call this week because there have been heaps of dedicated training efforts, good race performances and time volunteered. So, this week’s winner is…Matthew Freezer for a wise first cross country effort. Honourable mentions also to Lauren Nelson, Mike Hughes and Alex Wun Jones for turning up to training in only shorts and t-shirt on a cold evening!

Indoor Champs Meeting
I’m organising an information meeting for all those expressed an interest at some point this week. More details will follow very soon; please let me know if you have attendance problems or difficulty paying your membership to qualify for selection.

Paying Subscriptions
Just a gentle reminder to those who train regularly and anyone who wants to buy kit or compete for the team, you need to pay your membership to Kent Union. The website contains a very clear set of instructions.

Have a good, athletics filled week,

Sam (Athletics and Running Club)

Week 7 News

Posted on November 5, 2007

Hey Everybody!

Hope everyone has a good week. This week is filled lots of anxiety-filled news and almost immediate responses to relevant news would be appreciated. On the other hand, the newsletter is back on schedule this week but the less said about my essays the better…

Sprint Training
There will be no more sprint training on Tuesday evenings, they will be on Monday and Wednesday evenings at the Track from now on; get there for 6 pm please (scroll down me for directions) and please let Stephen (sp251) know if you are coming.

X-Country Racing
We really need to get a team together the BUSAs in February and we have a race at Swanley this Sunday (11/11/07). The atmosphere is very friendly and a very wide range of runners take part so there will always be people around you. The course is nice and flat, 5 miles long and the race fee is £2 (bring a bit of petrol money, too). Let know by 5 pm Wednesday if you want take part, please, including your vest size and if you are able to drive.

Indoor Championships in December
Please could you let me know very soon if you want to do this because I’ve seen Medway’s team and they are going to give us an absolute fucking hiding if we don’t fill up more spaces! Our honour is at stake! Available events are 60m, 200m, 400m, 1500m, 4 x 200m relay, high jump, long jump and shott putt for both guys and girls.

Kit
Yes, very exciting developments have been happening on the kit front (take a bow Tristan). It includes tracksuits! You’ll need to be quick off the mark when we confirm that we are taking orders though.

Field Events on Thursday
Will need to make their own way down to the Track on Thursday because El Presidente is away for a couple of days. Please let Gillien at the Invicta desk know you are from the uni and what coaching you would like.

Athlete of the Week
This week’s winner is Mark Cockles, cross country star-in-the-making!

Have a good, athletics filled week,

Sam

Week 6 News

Posted on October 30, 2007

Hey Everybody,

Hope you had a good week and my apologies for how the weekly emails are getting later and later. I’m currently writing an essay and consequently vehemently dislike any typing beyond the call of duty…

Getting to the track
Here’s a map link:

http://www.flashearth.com/?lat=51.278572&lon=1.064363&z=17.8&r=0&src=msl

This map is good by the virtue of the fact you can get a decent overview of Canterbury to get your bearings. However, the track just off Knight Avenue (CT2) hadn’t been built yet in this picture and we still had a cinder one on campus! To get there people should head towards the Westgate and look out for St Dunstan’s Church and The Monument pub on St Dunstan’s Street. Head down London Road (opposite the pub) until you reach the flyover. This should take 5 minutes. Go under the flyover and come out the other side on Knight Avenue. The entrance to the track is on your left about 70 yards down. If you live in town, get there for about 6.15 pm on training nights.

Cross Country
Congratulations to Oliver Keppel for his cracking result in the Kent League match at Capstone Park in Chatham, coming a brilliant 23rd in a tough field. If more people would like to train towards cross country training, please come foward because we are looking to put a team together for BUSA and we have to start booking stuff soon.

Running Club
Congratulations on the runners who put in the awesome effort on Wednesday, you should all be really proud of yourselves! The Wednesday run is still at 1pm from the Sports Centre but people voted that they would like the Sunday run at 4pm from the Sports Centre. Please note that isn’t too late to join and improve your fitness at a level you are happy at. Training diaries to be returned each week will be sent out tommorow.

Sprinting
Stephen (sp251) will no longer meet people on campus anymore since the group seems to be quite settled. Get to the track for 6-ish please and do turn up on a Tuesday and don’t waste his evening.

Jumping and Throwing
Once again last week, the turn-out for this was rubbish and people could be doing other things with their time instead of waiting for people to turn up. If there is a better way of making field events more accessible to people, we genuinely would like to hear them. Otherwise, it becomes a case of ‘use it or loose it’.

Membership
I know the system is flawed and we are doing are best to sort things out. Please keep trying through www.kentunion.co.uk because we need to unlock our budget soon!

Have a good week, Sam (Athletics and Running Club)

Week 5 News

Posted on October 23, 2007

Hey Everybody,

I’m sorry about the criminally late newsletter this week; It’s been busy…

Player of the Week

Player of the Week is Sarah Kuhl for the excellent performance and leadership with the Running Club this week.

Sprint Training

Please note two important things here. 1) Stephen won’t be meeting people at the Venue anymore because a pretty solid group is coming together, you will have to make your own way down. However, email me if you would like to be taken to the track from campus. 2) Wednesday’s training is cancelled! It’s Stephen’s birthday and he wants a night on the lash, I suspect!

Running Club

Mary Nelson, Nicolas De La Vega and Sarah Kuhl will be collaborating on leading the Running Club sessions whilst yours truly is injured, and they’ll be mixing things up a bit… Congratulations to all the runners who have been turning up in recent weeks, the improvements have been brilliant!

Membership

It’s come to my attention that there have been some problems with Kent Union’s website (I bet that’s not the first time that you have heard that!). Apparently, the lower tariff of membership (£10) hasn’t been listed as an option, only the Full price (£20). Not our fault, I hasten to add, and the Tom Marsh is pestering the website people about it.

Committee roles

The Committee has expanded exponentially this week! Rob Llewellyn is now Social Sec. and Michael Hughes and Adam Silver are in charge of Media and Promotion duties. All we need now is a secretary and a treasurer! Minutes from last week’s meeting are now available.
Kit

We are looking to order flash kit very soon but you have to be a member to make an order! However, it will be very worthwhile because we have been invited to an…

Indoor Championships!

Brilliant!! It will be held on December 5th at Lee Valley in London (we will travel down for the day) and it is a great chance to represent the university! There is only a reduced programme, so you will need to train (it is effort that counts, not necessarily ability) to impress the Team Captains (Stephen and Mary). Entries close on November 25th and kit etc. must be sorted beforehand, let me know if you fancy a great day out!

Have a great week, Sam

Week 4 News

Posted on October 14, 2007

Hi Everybody! (Hi Doctor Sam!),

This morning we had the first X-Country race of the year, a Fitness League race at Rough Common. We couldn’t have had a better morning for it and there were some brilliant student performances. Josh Nice picked up from last year to finish 4th whilst Oliver Keppel gave him a bloody good race and finished 6th. Some athletes were still finding their cross country legs (El Presidente, 32nd) and others were taking their first steps on them, new boys Danny and Lee acquitting themselves well over the 5 and a bit mile course. Results can be found at http://kfl.canterburyharriers.org/index.php, probably some time tomorrow. The next race is at Swanley on Sunday 11th November, a nice flat course and those who are interested are advised to start training!

Player of the Week

This award recognises the athlete who has done well over the course of a week in terms of attendance, effort, improvement and competition performance. So, the award to…Adam Silver! He pips Oliver Keppel to the award by the virtue of his gung-ho attitude to sprint training and reporting for inQuire.

Training

Now believe it or not, in order to improve at any form of athletics, you need to do some training! Attendance in the last few weeks could be described as ‘spartan’ and I would like to assure people that we are not anti-social nutters, it really is fun and beginners are very welcome and well-looked after. You can bring friends along for moral support but please do something!

An update in terms of field events. I can confirm that there will be polevaulting with Tony Weston on Tuesdays, long and triple jump on Thursdays with Marianne Underwood and various throws with Tony Piersall on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

Track training for middle and long distances is open to all from now on and The Running Club, heroically led last week by Mary Nelson, will also begin to offer some more cross country orientated training to those who want to take it up. Hopefully Stephen Prosser will be well enough to resume sprint coaching this week

Membership

Please, please, please, please can you start to pay your subscriptions this week. You’ll need to navigate your way through the Kent Union website and on Tuesday, the Union have help stations set up all day in the Lighthouse for those who are struggling with said website. Running Club memebership is £10, BUSA Competition membership is £20. Obligatory mention also for Invicta’s £50 track fee deal; all money spent already is deducted from that sum.

Kit

We are looking to order kit very soon so please pay your membership and you will be entitled to order fancy stuff like tracksuits and hoodies with your name on them, thus looking thoroughly professional!

Committee

We are looking to fill several crucial committee roles and it is a great chance to contribute to student like at the uni. Paid-up members will be eligible to put themselves forward for the roles of Treasurer, Secretary, Social Secretary and Media Officer. Email me to nominate yourself and I’ll define the roles for you.

SOCIAL!!!

This Wednesday (17/10/07) at 8pm in Mungo’s for drinks and then onto the Venue for those who are up for it.

Look forward to seeing you soon, Sam
